Refridgerator is freezing food

Hi there - I purchased a used refridgerator off craigslist from a honest person. He sold it to me because the refridgerator side was freezing the contents that were put in the fridge. I’ve been scratching my head on this fridge issue for a month now. Here is what I have troubleshooted so far.

The ADV control board was fried when I bought it. I replaced it, hooked up the new wiring harness and the problem still persisted.

I manually ran the defrost by pushing the fridge door light toggle 5x. The defrost heater worked fine and kicked in.

i checked continuity and passed:
*]defrost thermostat in the freezer on the evaporator coils
*]thermostat control for the fridge and freezer
I also checked:
*]the damper door works fine and i can see it opens and closes.
*]Freon is running fine because the fridge and freezer freezes up.
I really dont know what else to check or troubleshoot.

It seems like the fridges thermostat is broken because its not closing the damper door when the fridge temp is reached. Is this the problem with the damper door or the thermostat control in the fridge? Any suggestions or additional tests I can run?

Measure the freezer temperature and post.

Hi Richappy - Thanks so much for your help. I was in Cancun for the last week and unable to reply. Back to problem solving!

I measured the freezer temp of -30 degrees Fahrenheit. I see normal operating range is between 0 and 4 degrees. What is the solution to this? Thank you in advance for your knowledge

If your fridg is running constantly, one of the cold controls is shorted, if when turning either one off, there is no click, it’s bad.

Hi Ric - Thanks for the reply.

I checked the ohms on both controls and both checked out fine. I did notice there was a click on the fridge control, but not the freezer control when I turned the control on/off.

I presume I need to replace the freezer control even though the ohms connectivity checked out fine?

Thank you

I also want to mention the freezer does shut off once in awhile, but seems as though it does run constantly.

Yes, I would replace that control.

Thanks Ric - Ill give it a try and let you know in a week or so if the problem persists.

Ric, I think I got them mixed up. The freezer control will click when I turn the knob off, but the fridge control will not click off. Its silent when I turn it to zero. Does this still mean to now replace the fridge control instead of freezer since the fridge won’t click? They both pass the connectivity test. I don’t want to spend money buying both controls. Any thoughts? Thanks

If you turn off the fridg control and it still is shorted, replace it.

Ric - I really want to make sure I have this right.

You think the freezer is out of range (-30) because the fridge control isnt’t clicking when i turned it from on to off? I want to make sure before i spend the $100 on this part.

I dont seem to understand this because when I run only the freezer while having the fridge control in the off position. The freezer still runs constantly.

Thank you

The fridg control is supposed to turn the fridg off when it is turned off,you need a new control.

Hi Ric - Does my model of fridge have a thermistor?

No thermistors in your fridg, control is the most probable failure.

Ric - I am buying the fridge control today. Do I need to replace the freezer section control too or do you think its fine? When I run only the freezer (with the fridge control off) the freezer reaches -30. I assume the freezer control needs replacing too?

Thank you

I also do want to mention with the freezer control off and the fridge control ‘on’ the freezer will stop running when I turn the fridge section temp control to off. i hope I’m not over thinking this, but does this mean my fridge control has still failed if it will turn the freezer on and off as expected?

If the freezer control is not turning the compressor off till it gets to -30, that is the control I would replace first. This control controls the compressor, the other one controls the damper motor.

YES! I think we are now getting somewhere. The fridge control does close the damper correctly and the freezer control does not turn off the compressor until -30 or colder. Is there any other part you think needs to be replaced that controls the compressor…etc?

That is the only part that controls the freezer temperature.

Mr. Ric - I spent the money on the highly expensive freezer thermostat control. The temperature reached the -30 degrees again and never did the compressor off. I tested this with the fridge side control off. What is making the freezer get way out of control?
