My refrigerator and freezer are both warm. I have the temp setting all the way up and at times I feel some cool are, but not enough to keep the freezer cold enough to freeze anything. I have cleaned the coils under the bottom of the refrigerator, but that did not see to help. The fan near the compressor seems to run all the time. what else could it be?
Ok. The coils are clean (cleaned coils last month) Can see and feel the fan is moving air. Compressor is warm to the touch. What next?
Okay I uncovered the evap coil and it was covered with ice. I thawed the ice and checked the drain line. I am not sure if it was frozen before but all of the water went down the line. After plugging the refrigerator back up, I could feel cool air at the end of the line. Monitoring the temperature of the freezer now at 50° after 30 minutes. Both fans are operating and the compressor seems to be running fine. I have never had an issue with this fridge the 22 years that I have had it. what would have caused this issue?
Now 3 hours late and a little tweaking on the defrost control, the freezer temp is now down to 30 degrees. After reading some other forums, it is important for me to mention that ice build up that I thawed was very thick and on one end. It was not evenly across the evap coil. So is the problem the defrost control or is it an HVAC issue(like low freon)?
If you only had partial frost, you either have a bad condensing fan motor, or a refrigerant leak and or a bad compressor.
If fridg has R12 refrigerant, you are waisting a lot of power per month, something like $100. A new fridg would pay for itself in one year.
Around 9 pm tonight, checked the coil again and it was frozen on the same end. There must be a small leak somewhere in the system. It was not out of freon, but was extremely low. Added a few ounces of freon. Those few ounces of freon made a world of difference. Freezer is now below 0 degrees. Fridge is cooling again. Thanks for your advice, but I will try to get more time out of old faithful here and save for a new Fridge.
