Removal of agitator cap on GE WAsher

I need to remove an Agitator from GE washing machine before I will chance ordering a part. This machine was purchased new in 2008,. The 1 page instructions that came with the machine provide some very basic repair instructions. Part of the section dealing with Removal Spin Basket states "remove agitator cap to determine attachement (agitator) method".
This agitator has a fabric softerner on the top that comes off, but then there is a agitator cap that seems to have no way to remove it. I can’t seem to be able upload /attach an image however the of the cap seems to have something molded on the whole surface that looks like a shallow cross (no not a phillips head).
Looking on utube they seems to suggest I try to place hot water in the tube then us a lever action to prior the agitator off. I am hesitant to do that as am afraid that i may break it.

Any idea?

"ionally a garment may get caught under the agitator of the washer. Review the information below to see if you can resolve yourself.

1995 and newer:
[LIST]The agitator cannot be removed as a do it yourself type of repair. It will require a GE technician to remove the agitator.
