replacing relay/overload - Whirlpool top-mount

Greetings;

New to forum, please forgive errors.

I’m wanting to replace relay/overload, "starter device," on Whirlpool top-mount fridge (ET8MTMXKQ0-0), hoping to cure frequent, erratic, random cycling of compressor and fan.

The new starter device "kit" (a collection of several pieces) I received is apparently an updated replacement for original parts. Online illustrated part no. AP3961332 is a perfect match to original, while my received part WPL 8201769 is something very different. In particular the new relay is a self-contained unit with extra electrical terminals, old one is built into existing plastic cover. And the new cover is a different size and shape. The overload does seem to match.

The new parts don’t fit neatly or obviously onto the compressor’s pins. It is not clear which wires go to which terminals on the new relay (fridge does have a capacitor) or what the included jumper is for. The included "instructions" are particularly opaque – poor text and useless illustrations.

I’m told these are the correct replacement parts but it looks, at best, like a jury rig to me.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Allen

The two part numbers you are identical!! Check the picture of this item AP3135289, factory service part 2212964, if identical, I would use this part.

Mine looks exactly like AP3961332. And, also exactly like the picture that pops up when I search for WPL 8201769 – which I guess is to your point that they are the same item.

Then order and use AP3961332, all your wires should fit

Well, naturally, I did order AP3961332, hence my confusion – sorry if I did not make that clear.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I know how to proceed at this point.
