Roper (whirlpool) won't start. Tried all the usual problems.

Hello,

I have been frequenting this helpful forum for a long time and can usually find the answer I need without asking. However, I’m stuck right now.

I have a Roper dryer that won’t start. It worked fine until yesterday. Now it is dead and will not start. I have looked at other posts and can confirm.

  1. There is proper 240W of power coming in from the plug.
  2. The Thermal Fuse is good. I even tried the trick of connecting the two blue wires to double check it wasn’t the fuse.
  3. The start button works when disconnecting it and using an Ohm tester.
  4. The door switch works when disconnecting it and using an Ohm tester.

UGH, I was hoping this would be any easy fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to have to call a repair man since this isn’t an expensive dryer. If i have to pay him, I might as well just buy a new one.

    Did you check for 120 volts?
    On most units the motor runs off of 120: L1 to Neutral (black to white)

The model number is RED4440VQ1

I used a multimeter on the three connections on the back while plugged into the wall. It is getting 120V/120V/240V when you do the left-middle. right-middle, outer two test.

Since you have already check some components I would check timer contacts C to B. They should be closed in any cycle type.
It is a good idea to disconnect the wires going to at least one of them. This prevents you from reading a parallel/alternate circuit path. Also use your most sensitive meter scale.

If that check out OK then I would connect one meter lead to L1 at the power cord end and leave it there. Now work your way back through the motor circuit to find the open.
