I have a Maytag Neptune that has a major out of balance problem. I’ve had it for about 6 years and this is the first problem Ive had with it. Already replaced the shock struts on the back of the tub…no luck. I’ve tried different size loads…no luck. I thought maybe the inertial unbalance switch is bad but I checked the circut and I’m getting the 24 VDC across like the troubleshooting guide say’s. The machine goes out of balance almost instantly during the wash cycle and it won’t go into spin at all. At the end of the wash cycle I get the code "Lr". The wire harness is attached and looks fine. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.
I have almost the same problem and I found a thread yesterday that said it’s the clutch. I’ve now got the machine on it’s back like the instructions said but can’t find the thread again. I’ll let you know when I find it.
here’s the thread I found yesterday… good luck

I have same problem and bought a parts washer. I swapped out the entire tub, shocks and all and still have the same problem. Did you figure anything out yet? Alot of posts are referring to the top loads not the fronts, I have a 5500 front load.
Nothing. I tried changing the front springs with some ones I found and it helped a little but didn’t fix. I’m still getting the Lr at the end of the cycle. Not sure if I want to keep putting money into it not knowing what to change. I run the quick spin test and I get a speed of 73 as the max, usually around 65. The motor does not run for the six seconds and holds the speed. So i tried the motor control board output test and the motor spins at the 50 rpm like it says. Thats what is confusing, not sure what to try next.
I found this link. I’m thinking that it has to be either shocks or maybe a broken bolt in the spinner arm. I’ll let you know if I get anywhere, please do the same. Have you separated the inner and outer tub yet? I had the whole tub out and tried to lightly drive the shaft out and it didn’t really move. Don’t know if something holding it or I just need to hit it harder. Here are some good schematics though.
Alright one more longshot and I will let you know if I fixed mine. I just got a new pump, I know this sounds wierd but it is logical. How much water is your machine letting into the tub. It should only fill for about 1 minute. A guy I talked to after I described my problem and what Ive been through says its possible that the tub is over filling and then when it takes off in wash it is out of balance because of excess water.
any luck with this? this machine is driving me crazy i have to figure this out!!!
Yes, I have competely torn down this machine, give me your symptoms, and when it happens.
Great thank you finally!!! I have racked my brain and been in1000 internet sites looking for info. This is the neptune model 5500bww As soon as the machine starts to agitate the drum is all over the place banging side to side. i got this machine from a family member that insists it was working fine. So in the process of moving this machine from place to place it does not run. this is completely level on solid flooring. It does not matter if is is empty or full very extreme banging im at a loss thank you for any help it is greatly appreciated
You are getting to much water in the tub, then when its starts to take off, the water sloshes and makes it rock back and forth. You either have a bad water valve that may not be closing all the way or the float on the pump is faulty. I would take the float off(maroon colored round) blow into it see it you hear it kicking in and out, you should hear 2 clicks. Take the water valve out and try to clean it out. Could have sediment in it not letting valve fully close. Thats my guess.
ok i will start there and post how it goes shortly thank you again
the float is the round thing on top of the pump with the baggie over top of it. Have you run thru all the diagnostic cycles yet? Behind the control panel there should be some paperwork with diagnostic directions. Did we fix the banging though? did it finish the cycle? Could code be from previous cycle, just ignore the lr code for now.
ok then i did clean out the float and it did click i took out the control board to check and nothing is burnt or blown so running another cycle now have not ran the diagnostics just ran the service codes oh and yes it seems the banging has stopped ill check back in 20 mins
ok ran a new cycle same result got the lr code opened it up and i do not have the diagnostic paperwork (i did buy this used so who knows) i am so spent on this i have worked on this 3 days now t
gonna eat dinner take a break if you have any more advise it is greatly appreciated thanks again
