The fridge is warm and the freezer partially freezes

Hello!

My kids and I bought our first home. It is a fixer upper and what a blast! The place has been sitting empty for a little over a year. The problem I found with the fridge is that the freezer part freezes on the back wall for about a foot and a half to two foot area(in the middle), the rest is room temp. And the fridge is only room temperature. With the research Ive done it is possible it is a defrost cycle issue. But we do not have extra money for a new/used one so I want to try and fix it myself. I dont have a model number but it looks to be possibly from 2000-2001, almond GE side by side. It has an ice maker/water in the door but no ice maker. If the issue IS a defrost cycle please help in confirmation and repair suggestion, or if something else is possible please let me know. Thank you!

PS! I forgot to add since we are in the boonies and do not have internet I am checking this at work.

When I am off later I will follow the steps in both replies. Thank you both sooo much. I work again tomorrow and if I can find the model number and also add anymore information I will do so. Thank you again
