Time for scrap ?

Gibson 19cu ft upright after defrosting will not run more than 2-4 seconds. Overload relay on side of comp specs say 2.3 FLA - 21.0 LRA. Clamp-on amp meter reads 18 when energized then kicks off 2 seconds later. Are we kaput ??
Thank you…/gary

Being rather disgruntled that my post hadn’t received even ONE reply from the 30 that read it, I went ahead and eliminated the overload switch altogether and wired directly to the terminals on compressor. Other than needing to change one breaker in the sub panel from 20A to 30A due to frequent tripping, everything seems to be A-OK.
Thanks again for the help…/gary

Sorry for not replying but you now have a fire hazard.

Check the compressor temperature on a frequent basis.

Also I hope that you did not also get rid of the start relay as now both compressor windings will be on and this will definitely cause overheating of the compressor.

Note that changing a 20 amp circuit to a 30 amp circuit is a no no unless you also changed the wiring.
If the house burns down and the investigation finds it is due to this circuit an insurance company may reject the claim.

Rest assured I did none of the above. I was just kind of curious to see how fast somebody would respond. Thank you for your immediate response in the dangers of ‘jury rigging’ an appliance control and safety mechanisms…/gary

I cannot find a wiring diagram for this unit which is also one reason I did not reply.

Perhaps the following will help you check the motor windings.
Also check that they are not grounded.

Note that the check can tell you if a compressor is bad but does not tell you that it is good as it may have other internal problems.

There is not really a good way to check the relay unless there is evidence of overheating. So usually you just have to try a new one. Same goes for the overload.

Picture an inverted Y as the three comp terminals. Bottom of Y is top terminal also what overload connected too. The pair at bottom are 2 & 3…using digital meter I have ohms of 14 between 1-2. 3 between 1-3 and 17 between 2-3.
How can I post pic in here, or can I ?? …/gary

I do not really need a picture.
Your readings show that the windings have continuity re the two readings add up to the third reaing.
I cannot say if the actual resistances are OK as you need a rech sheet for that.

Also did you measure each pin to the compressors case (ground)?
All these readings should be infinite ohms.
If not a winding is grounded and the compressor is toast.

Damnit, I DID and meant to include in previous message, zip on continuity no reading at all. I even checked at diff places on compressor itself to be sure…
APD is close enough for me to run over and pick up
a new relay and keep fingers crossed.

Oh , the pic was going to be copy of schematic glued to back of freezer…

To add a picture it is the mountain with the sun icon.
There is a limit as to size.

Hope all works out OK for you.
I will keep my fingers crossed.

FYI: I am off to the lake and will not be back till next week.
