Washer agitates instead of spinning during the spin cycle.

I have a Whirlpool washer that was working fine until a couple if days ago. All of a sudden, during the spin cycle, the washer will continue to agitate instead of spinning. The water still drains out, but the clothes are still soaked because of the spin cycle not working correct. Any ideas how to fix it or what could be wrong?

Hi,

What is the model number of the washer?

Seems like a busted tranny AP3096209 Confirm by pulling the pump and motor and turning the tranny coupler clockwise. If it agitates, that confirms it. Rather rare though.

You have a bad clutch. You will need to pull the tranny to replace it.Order AP3094537
Have someone hold the agitator while turning the tranny coupler clockwise. Agitator should be easy to hold still, if not, you have a bad tranny although rather rare.

I can turn the tranny coupler several times and be able to hold the agitator. After about five spins or so the agitator wants to start moving. Still think its the clutch?

Yes, you definitely have a bad clutch. You can confirm by pulling the tranny, then try to turn the clutch band inside the clutch housing, if easy to turn, put a new clutch in.
After the new clutch is in, see if that solves all your other prioblems.

Thanks a lot. I have a new one arriving today. I should have it in this afternoon, I hope thats all that was wrong. I appriciate the help.

I replaced the clutch, and it does spin now. The only problem is it is still trying to agitate while spinning in the spin cycle. Seems like half of the problem was solved, any ideas for the rest?

If the movement of the agitator in spin fails to bunch the clothes and cause other problems like increased motor current in spin, or noticeable noises, I would run it till the tranny fails. Either that, or put a new tranny in.
I have seen slight movement in the agitators before, without seeing yours, it’s hard to tell if yours is "normal" or not.
