Washer Burning Smell, But Runs Fine when Tilted

I have a Maytag top-loading machine that is 11 years old. This past couple of months, it has developed an increasingly louder screatching/rattling sound during spin cycle. This past week, it started smelling like burnt rubber during the spin, and the sound is very load.

From the bottom, the belt looks "ok" (a couple worn spots), and all the bottom wheels all turn OK by hand. I also took off the tub top, and there is nothing caught between the inner and outer tub.

However, I noticed that if I tilt the washer against the wall (at about 45 degrees), and set it to spin, the sound and burning smell go away and the washer spins as it normally used to do. When I bring the washer back down and place it on all fours (as it would normally operate), the sound and smell come back.

If I am able to tilt the washer and remove the problem, what would this indicate in terms of what is wrong?

(Thanks in advance for any advice and assistance)

sounds like the rear tub berring is failing( eventualy they all do) it has on main berring and over the years it will wear out. unfortunatly it is integral to the tub shell. so a berring replacment usualy means tub replacement. look for lateral movement of the inner basket. too much slop and yu need the new tub. not usualy a cheep repair. check the lateral movement and post your results here. good luck
