washer empties while filling

My washing machine empties as it is filling up. It seems to fix the problem if I make the load lighter by taking out some of the clothes. I don’t overfill the machine to cause the issue. I simply can’t do larger than small load amounts or it won’t work right. Has a part possibly gone bad? I have also checked that the out hose in the back is not lower than the filled level of the maching, with no change in issue…
