We have a Maytag washer that just stopped when the tank filled with water. We could smell a strong odor of something burning. Opened the front of the washer and can smell it coming from the motor. If we try to place on agitate cycle, it tries to start and sometimes does run, but sounds terrible and still has that burning smell coming from the motor. Help I want to try to fix this myself. Would replacing the motor assist with this problem?
First, disconnect the belt and see if the motor runs without a load. If the motor runs without the belt, then the problem is either transmission-related, or pump related. If it doesn’t run without the belt, replace it. Good idea to also replace the belt. Almost forgot: The motor is supposed to freely glide and spring back. This is Maytag’s way of eliminating the clutch in their design. If there is no free side to side motion, this is sometimes enough to bind the motor.
