No previous issues, then set on cycle & pulled start knob. Immediately began agitation before filling with water first. Tried different settings, however, same result.
Does it fill with water at all?

if No - then try adjusting the water level setting from high to low a few times and try again. Then check to see if the plastic hose leading up to the switch from the tub is clear. Watch this video to see how to check the switch function and see if that hose is plugged.

If the water level switch isn’t working then it needs to be replaced.

if Yes - then either the water level switch is bad or the timer is bad. If you’ve tested the water level switch as noted above and its working correctly then likely your timer is bad.
