Washer made loud squeal, burning-rubber smell

Our 10-year-old Maytag has worked fine until now. The drive and pump belts are original. It was just about at the end of the rinse cycle when it suddenly started squealing very loudly, like a loose fan belt on a car, and emitted a burning-rubber smell. We turned it off right away. Nothing was leaking. The drum can’t be turned by hand. I’m unable to lift it to look underneath. Haven’t yet called for service. Does this sound like one or more broken belts, or something else, like a problem with the transmission? Thanks.
