Washer Not Agitating Properly in Wash Cycle

Our (old) Roper Washer (RAX6144EW1) is no longer agitating properly in the "wash cycle". according to my wife every other cycle seems to be working properly. Although the agitator does move (somewhat) it is not moving normally and occasionally will move rather quickly for a split second (slipping?) then start to hardly move again…I replaced the lid switch, successfully, myself recently for another issue and now this…the clothes are getting clean but I’m afraid this is the precursor to a much more serious problem…please post an answer if this is something I can fix myself…thanks in advance…bdamia
