washer will full up with water and stop

WHIRLPOOL washer Model # LSR7233B, LSV7223B, LSN7233B.
With the lid closed, the washer will full up with water and stop. To get it to start washing, I move the control/ timer/ cycle knob to a new position; it will wash and stop at the spin cycle. I repeat above and it will complete a wash cycle. Do I need to replace the timer?
