washer will not spin getting error 58 [E59]

Hello all-

So I have a front loading washer machine that will not spin all, when powered on, it will fill up with water, drain, but will not spin, just hum. I called the repair guy, real nice, asked if I was handy, advised for me tilt the machine on its back and look up. If you see the belt hanging there, its the belt usually.

Well doing this, I did not see any belts hanging, but I did find a tech data sheet for the machine, typed on the inside.

I discovered the machine has its on diagnostic mode in it that will tell you what could be going on with the machine. I did this and the read out says E59 No tacho signal for 3 seconds.

In the manual for these errors, it says check the belt, if in good condition remove the belt.

–The belt is in mint condition

Now the belt is removed see if the electric pulley spins freely, in both directions. If it does, check to see if the resistance in the motor is normal.

If the motor pulley spins freely in both directions, test the resistance measured in Ohms across the PINs on the motor.

–The resistance on the moter between PIN 4 and PIN 5 is at 117.6 Ohms, and the resistance between PIN 1 and PIN 2, PIN 1 and 3, and PIN 2 and 3, are about 4-5. According the manual the motor is good.

With the belt removed check to see if the drum will spin in both directions.

– The drum does not spin in any direction, it will kind of turn in both directions, but feels like it stuck or jammed. Visual inspection on baffles on the back side of the drum, show a oil drip trail from the center of the back of the drum. The same point where the main pulley in the brain train connects to the back of the drum. Good dark oil is dripping straight down from here.

With the machine powered on, and the back w/ the belt both off. The machine WILL fill the up, and WILL suck the water out of the drum. The motor WILL spin in both directions, like normal.
I am left to believe that the problem lays with the drum bearings. This is because the motor is working, but the drum still seems ‘stuck’.

If this is true, will these parts fix it?

I tried to get a good picture here, but its still grainy. See the darker grey line in the middle of the baffle? That is what I believe to dirty oil/greese.

Can someone confirm if this is whats going on? Could it be the Speed board that would prevent the drum to spin? Should the drum spin freely in both directions?

[SIZE=3]From my limited experience I would say your seal and bearings have failed. [/SIZE]
[SIZE=3]It appears that you have the inner tub removed from the outer tub (the one you have the photographs of). The only normal other reason for the inner drum being stiff to turn is something caught between the two drums, small items of clothing or things left in pockets.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]As far as I am aware there is no reason why the control board would prevent the drum spinning with the belt off, however I am not familiar with this particular machine.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]The stain does look like grease and is typical of failed seals and bearings. What happens water gets into the bearing housing and starts to corrode the bearings, the grease already in the housing mixes with this water and when the machine stops this mixture runs down the inside and the outside of the rear ‘half’ of the outer drum.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]Should your inner drum and spider be in good order you would only need the rear half of the outer drum, which comes complete with seal and bearings.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]Should you be ‘handy’ enough you may be able to get the seal and bearings out yourself and find a local supplier who can match them, perhaps not an exact match but an acceptable substitute, and then fit them, this will save you even more $$$. The only thing is it is not a Frigidaire ‘approved’ repair.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]The parts you have listed would appear to be satisfactory and are available at Sears dot Com / Parts direct (no spaces) for the outer tub c/w seal and bearings part # 134509510 for $190.33 and for the drum part # 134360910 $150.99 plus taxes, plus S&H.I believe Sears can be expensive for S&H so you will have to find out what is your best deal.[/SIZE]

So you asked for a response. I started the project of dissembling the washer at about 10:30AM this morning, and finished at about 6:15PM. Total work time about 7hours and 45mins.

As I was pulling the drum out of cabinet, I told my mother who was watching I bet its gonna be some underwear of some sort. As I unbolted the back of the outer drum from the front, and lifted it away, I hear a burst of laugher(mind you this is right after I cover the bearing junction with WD-40). I look down and I find a bunched up pair of panties that look like they have seen better days.

Now the washer, is quieter, and runs like a champ, almost new… While having the machine stripped apart, the water pump, seems to have quite a collection in its water trip. I found old milky way bars (how they got there I can’t begin to think), many many quarters, pennies, dimes, nickels, (enough to almost buy lunch), hair barrats, and little hair twisties.

I must confess I KNEW nothing about washer machines and how they functioned two days ago. But after disassembling this machine, and putting it back together, I have clear understanding now.

I found a nice step-by-step service manual online, that helped me through the process. That site is here:

Doing it myself AND not buying a $200 part saved me tons of money… lets do the math.

The tech said it would be $45 to come out place $8 a hour, plus parts and tax. Knowing me I would have already bought the part so lets assume I did.

TOTAL HRS WRKED: 7:45
PARTS: $175.49

              TOTAL: $285.49

To some it all up, I think I came out ahead on this one folks!!
