Top loading washer will agitate but will not spin. Water will drain, but the unit will not spin to wring clothes.
Would it start to spin if you open and close the lid during the drain?

No it still will not spin. I hear the motor going, smell grease, but will not spin.
Remove the cabinet and check the motor coupling. Instructions are attached.
