Washing machine noise

Our washer is making a lot of noise during wash and more-so in the spin cycle. I looked at the motor and transmission while it was washing. The transmission and brake assembly is spinning with the agitator. I don’t think that should. I would think the shaft should spin inside the transmission. Am I correct?

Gene,
It is not trying to spin during the wash cycle. I may have not explained it well. It is turning along with the agitator during the wash cycle. It spins really fast along with the agitator during the spin cycle. Should the assembly be turning at all?

Sorry for the delay and misunderstanding.

This is wrong and the problem is a bad brakes. It comes as a part of the transmission assembly only.

How can I remove the hub nut? Also, could the noise be the tub bearing? Can it be replaced without changing out the whole tub?

It is very hard and sometime almost impossible to remove it. You need a special spanner wrench to take it off. Original GE spanner wrench is pretty expensive but you can not use a universal one due to its quality. You will never get it tight enough with the universal one and you should use a heavy hammer on it. It is a left hand thread, so you turn it clockwise. Aluminum nut and steel spin basket and transmission spindle make a bad rust area for the nut to stick to.

Yes, the noise could be because of the tub bearing.
