water and ice dispenser won't stop running on GE side by side refrigerator/freezer

Hello,

I went to pour myself a glass of water from my GE side by side refrigerator/freezer today. I pushed the dispenser in, the water poured normally, and then I removed the glass, and the dispenser kept dispensing water! I tried pulling out the dispenser lever (the thing you depress with your glass) but it didn’t really seem to be stuck or anything. I opened the door finally, because I know it won’t dispense while the freezer door is open. I looked for a switch that goes to the water dispenser and couldn’t find one. I couldn’t move the fridge out from the wall because I was home alone so I couldn’t disconnect the water. I thought maybe it would stop if I switched from water to ice so I pressed the button for ice to be dispensed and then the ice dispenser continued to run without stopping! Finally I pressed the lock button for 3 seconds, and this seemed to stop the non-stop water or ice dispensing, while allowing me to finally close my freezer door.

Does anyone know what happened? It seems as though my refrigerator is in permanent dispense mode. I don’t have a lot of money so I would prefer not to pay someone to come out or pay the $79 diagnostic fee on the GE website (just for someone to tell me what the problem is, and not even to fix it!) if it could possibly be a quick and easy fix for me to do myself.

Thanks very much for reading this thread. I hope someone can help me out!
