Whirlpool dryer doesn't shut off in auto mode

In Auto mode, e.g. "Permanent Press", timer doesn’t advance.
Dryer heats and dries clothes. Clothes get too hot.

I took off the vent pipe, removed the back panel, vacuumed, there were no clogs, and vent flap is working fine.

Timer advances in timed mode.

Thanks!!!

Unplug dryer. Open control panel and disconnect the red wire from the timer. Make sure the wire terminal is not touching anything (put a piece of tape around it). Plug dryer back in and set to auto cycle. Does the timer advance now? (dryer will not heat in this test). If so, then your operating thermostat is not cycling. If it still does not advance, unplug dryer, check the power resistor mounted to the side of the timer. Black rectangular object with two terminals. Should read 4000 to 5000 ohms.

Thank you very much for the suggestions, I will try tonight.
