My washer started making very loud banging noises during the spin cycle. I took it apart and found a couple ball-bearings on the bottom shelf along with some small pieces of twisted metal, metal shavings and what looked like oil spray. I think I will need to replace the rear tub at the least. Will I likely need to replace the basket as well or will damage of this type be mainly confined to the tub? Any pointers as this is the first time I am attempting something like this

You most likely, will be able to get by with the rear outer tub assembly.
In most cases (90%), if you have not run the machine too long with the bearing noise, you can usually clean the tumbler shaft, scratches, and minor gouges with emory cloth, and not need it.
Just remember, when you install the tumbler shaft pulley, use a little "loc tite" on the bolt threads and get it as tight as possible.

I had the same issue and I’ve just recieved my replacement rear outer tub. The only issue I have run into is replacing the clamps that hold the rear and front outer tubs together. I had no problem getting the top and bottom clamps on but due getting the side clamps back on is proving to be a problem. There simply is not enough room between the tub and the side panel of the washer to snap them on. Is there a special tool (like a snap ring plier) that can be used to get these back on?

There are no special tool(s) to remove or install the tub clips other than a
flat blade screwdriver and hammer .
The screwdriver, is to remove the clips, after the bolts are removed.
The Hammer, to tap them back into position, before installing the bolts.
I believe if you remove the tub and basket. From the unit completey your clips will be easier to put on. There isn’t any real easy and fast way to do the job. You need to know also that whirlpool puts a 10 year warrent on the tub and basket assembly they send free all asembled together so all you have to do is drop it in and hook your springs shocks etc. And your done.
