Whirlpool makes clunking noise / doesn't agitate

 My Whirlpool washer model # LA7800PW1 stopped agitating and made a loud clunking noise.

 The washer spins and drains fine and stops quickly when the lid is opened. After draining I pulled the back off and found the belt quite loose. I tightened it, reloaded the machine, started it, and it ran for 10 min before making the noise and stopping agitating. (The agitator tried to move with each clunking noise, and will sometimes work for a few seconds if you stop and then restart it). I moved it to spin cycle, which it did, and also completed the rinse cycle without a hitch.

 I cannot tell where the slipping/clunking is coming from exactly. I took the belt off and spun the transmission pulley by hand. It turns easily and smoothly.

 Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!

You probably have a busted shift spring in the tranny, part # AP3094501, a messy job,but doable.
