Whirlpool Refrigerator help

8 year old Whirlpool fridge started making a loud continuous buzzing noise 2 days ago. A day later, it stopped cooling. Lights are still on in the fridge. Is this a faulty compressor? And is this something I can replace myself, or do I need to call a tech?

Thanks,
Jack

Here are your parts

You have to find out what is buzzing.
If it is the compressor then it could be the compressor, the start/overload device or the capacitor.
Strange that it keeps on buzzing as usually if the compressor will not start (buzz) it will overheat and trip the overload protect.

I cannot say if you can fix it as I do not know your mechanical/electrical talent level.

Here is a good site with how to check things.

Note: The compressor can check out OK electrically and still be the problem as it may have internal mechanical problems.

The only definitive way to check the capacitor is to replace it. Using a meter will check if it is open or a dead short but does not check it under working voltages.

Not sure if you figured it out yet or not, but here is a very helpful forum. Sounds like it could be your circuit board. Alot of great info on this site!
