Whirlpool refrigerator starts to thaw /warm

I need help troubleshooting my refrigerator (Whilepool ED22TEXHW00) as it works most of the time but every few days the compressor will fail to kick on and freezer starts to thaw, fridge starts to warm. I am constantly monitoring it so when it stops (usually overnight) I adjust temp knobs or unplug /replug and it will come back on. I replaced the icemaker about 8 months ago and that continues to work, but is this a thermostat issue? any other ideas? Trying to fix myself, hoping to avoid service call…was made in 03/2000. Really appreciate any advice here!!

If all the fans and compressor fail, drop the control panel and tap on the defost timer (AP3110896) or the cold control (AP3037004) If one of these fails, replace the item.

Thanks Richappy for the advice, I will definitely give this a shot, but I want to ensure I understand your steps here (sorry not too familiar with the terminology but I am pretty good at taking things apart and reassembly). I am assuming my fans and compressor are working fine as the routinely come on and run for long periods of time, so I agree it is likely one of the two elements you identified above. I have looked through the diagram on the website and it makes sense where the defrost timer and cold controls are located, but what do you mean by tapping them, is it literally just tapping on each one w my finger and that would trigger them to work? just trying to understand how exactly to test their integrity. REALLY appreciate your help here!!

The act of turning the cold control and it works indicates it is sticking, just tap with some hard object to verify that is the problem.
