Whirlpool Washer Noisy and Won't Spin

Whirlpool direct drive washer was making noise and wouldn’t agitate or spin. Agitator dogs were bad and were replaced with repair kit. Now it agitates fine but makes noise while doing it. Still won’t spin and makes noise when it should be spinning. No unusual smell or smoke. Is there a way to test for bad coupling or bad clutch? Could it be the transmission? Is there a way to test trans?

After disassembling the washer I’ve concluded it must be the transmission that’s bad. Motor runs, coupler is good, pump not jammed, clutch looks good, etc. When I’ve hold the clutch housing and turn the coupler on the trans clockwise, the clutch housing tries to turn but gears slip inside the trans. Since the washer is 18 yr old instead of a new trans I’ll junk the washer ever though it still looks new.

If the washer is otherwise in good shape, it is well worth repairing versus buying the new junk they are selling today. You can replace the transmission or open it up to find the problem. Probably just a stripped spin gear (plastic) which is easily replaced and costs less than a new transmission.

Thank you. I was just frustrated it went two days without a reply from anyone. If I knew for certain that is all that’s wrong with it I would repair the trans. But the coarse noise it makes while agitating and when it should be spinning (same noise) makes me think it could be the tub bearing too which I read is a big job to replace and isn’t recommended without a new tub.

You were reading about a model with a different drive train altogether. Your model does not have a tub bearing. The noise may be coming from your faulty transmission. Might recognize it if you post video to youtube.
