XL1800 Space Maker Microwave Not Heating

Hi All,

Here’s the issue. This microwave does not heat and is making quite a bit more noise than usual. Otherwise, everything works, lights, front panel, turn table, fans, etc. Just will not heat and is making a loud "hum."

I did some troubleshooting already using some other forums on the net but am not able to nail down the issue(s) based on what I’ve found.

What I did was check all the fuses (they are good) by checking for continuity and they ohm out at 0.0. I visually inspected all the major components that I could see without removing anything, and I did not see anything resembling a damage. I then disconnected the harness from the transformer to the magnetron and checked for 120V while the microwave was calling for heat (I was running the microwave in normal operation).

Now, what I found was that I did not get 120 VAC from the transformer, more like ~3-4 VAC. What I can’t figure out is if this is a capacitor issue, a diode issue, a control panel issue, or a transformer issue. I’m not anywhere close to an electrician and I debated hard even bothering to open the appliance without a service manual but times are tight!

The loud "hum" disappeared during operation when the magnetron was disconnected from the transformer, so my guess is the magnetron is working but is loud when not receiving proper voltage and doesn’t heat noticeably at such a low voltage.

Could someone guide me in the right direction on how to test the other components properly; what voltages I should expect on the input side of the capacitor, stuff like that.

Thanks.
