Washer was making a squeaking sounds. Replaced the snubber and belt this morning (both were worn). That took care of the spin cycle noises. However, the agitation cycle scrubbing noise is still there. With the front off the washer, it sounds like it is coming from the area near the snubber. It is part of the same sounds we heard before, but minus the squeak/squall.
Could this be bearings or transmission or???

It’s not likely, you have a bad bearing or transmission, based on your description.
Both components are located higher in the cabinet, the bottom opf the tub assembly.
If the noise is limited to the wash cycle, only, and is coming from the bottom of the base,
I would suspect the brake rotor is slipping,and reccomend you start there.

Thank you so much for your reply, I was just coming back to add some more information…This morning, when trying a smaller load, the noise isn’t as loud, but still there. The load got off balance and I stopped the cycle to open the lid and the tub kept spinning for a bit. That would still point to the brakes right? Also today I noticed that the tub spins rather freely by hand when the machine is off and empty.

You’re on it , today.
You’ve guessed right again.
I’m positive, when you start to remove the pulley and cam assembly, You’re going to find several distorted or broken parts, as well as highly glazed brake rotor pad.
Just remember ,
When you install the new brake rotor, put a little bit of grease on the splines, and use emory cloth and alcohol to clean the inside of the stator(the SS ring that the rotor seats on)
Also a thin coat of grease on the faces of the cam assembly ans pulley.

The pulley was really worn, a small piece broke off when taking it off. The brake didn’t appear to be worn that we could tell, but since we had the new one and had it apart, the new one was installed, new spring, and new retainer along with the thrust bearing kit you suggested. Don’t know which part or combination of parts it was, but it’s fixed. Saved my washer from the dump for all total about $75 (belt, snubber, brake rotor, brake spring, brake retainer, and thrust bearing kit). Well worth it to keep it going a bit longer. I can only hope to get another 7 years out of it without anything going wrong. This was the first time it ever gave us any problems or needed anything fixed!

Great job,
It was most likely(I’m pretty sure - 98%) a combination of the brake rotor slipping, and a worn out thrust bearing assembly.
We used to see it quite a bit,
I’m sure you’ll be fine for a while, maybe even another seven years.

We are back to the same noises again. The quiet lasted about a week, then a few quiet noises would come and go. It is back to the scrubbing sound during the agitation cycle (doesn’t last the whole cycle, comes and goes) and a squall and scrubbing sound at the beginning of the spin, but stops once the spin gets going good. When the tub stops spinning, there is a loud noise…a bang/clank (this is the only new sound).
Any suggestions what to look for or check?

I’m hoping all you need to do is, re adjust the Cam and drive pulley, tolerances, and check that the brake rotor is moving free and easyon the splines of the transmission housing.
I’m hoping that we don’t have an agitator shaft seizing up to the bearings in the transmission top housing(new transmission) or a worn spin bearing(between the tubs and tub support).
See if you can isolate the noise(s), is it down low at the base, or is it up high, around the bottom of the tub.
Let us know, and we can go from there.

We couldn’t really tell where the sound was coming from. However, today, the tub quit moving all together when the washer was in the spin cycle.
Upon inspection, the new pully that was installed and been torn up a bit, like the one we’d taken off. Repositioned everything, cleaned/greased, put back together. The pulley turned fine, but the tub didn’t move.
I think we’ve pretty much decided to scrap it as we do have a backup washer that was given to us recently.

Sounds like a seized up tub or spin bearing,
Glad you have a back up.
It’d make for a nice "tinkerring" project, if you’re in the mood.
