compressor start relay clicking

HELP ME…

i have a problem that the freezer and the fridge side went warm last night on xmas day, my leftovers were moved to a 2nd fridge in garage. i checked the coils under fridge and they are clean from dirt and hair. i removed the inside panel of the freezer and the coils there are very clean. i was checking the capacitor (i think that is what it is called attached to the compressor) and it keeps clicking. when it clicks the light inside will go slightly dim then normal, go dim when it clicks then normal… and the compressor doesnt come on

i dont know how to determine if the compressor is bad or its the start relay/

can anyone help a guy that barely gave his kids a christmas cause my wife took off and left us 3 months ago. raising 2 girls is hard enough i really dont want to have to woory about this too.

You will have to remove the cover off the side of the compressor. Once done remove the start relay [Refrigerator repair guide](http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=4367793&pn_=AP4367793"]http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=4367793&pn_=AP4367793

Remember which wires go where!

Shake the relay and if it rattles it is bad, replace it. If it doesn’t rattle you can be reasonably sure it is not bad.

Also make sure the fan beside the compressor will run. Hope this helps! [URL="http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/Refrigerator-repair.html)

i replaced the start relay and what i hear/see happening is the compressor start (determined by compressor vibration) then 3 seconds later compressor shuts off then recycles every 2-3 minutes

If you replaced the rattlin relay but the compressor was still hot, it may not start with the new relay. Please allow the compressor to cool completely and then retry. Unplug, take back panel off, set a box fan nearby and run fan on high until cool. Then retry.

i replaced the relay after the fridge had been unplugged overnight and the compressor did get HOT within 3 minutes after having the new relay in and plugging it in. The old relay was definitely wasted as it shook like a babies rattle. i have checked and i spent 1100.00 on this fridge 9-10 yrs ago, it has been well worth the money and if the compressor is bad i think that would be worth the 3-400.00 to keep this one rather than buying a new one. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO HEAR FROM THE PROFESSIONALS OUT THERE ON THIS THOUGHT. I THINK THE COMPRESSOR IS THE BIG ITEM TO REPLACE AM I RIGHT? what else should i be concerned with if i repair this one?

please let me know your thoughts as money is really tight and if i can replace the compressor on this and get another 5-10 yrs i will be a happy guy.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A COMPRESSOR AT A GREAT PRICE?

For starters this is not really a do-it-yourself kind of repair. I fully support do-it-yourselfers but you need special equipment to recover the gas, refill the gas, pull a vacuum on the system and braze the lines.

With the model number starting with TFX, I would think it is older than 9 years old, more like 12-15 but I am not sure about that. I think you got your moneys worth out of this refrigerator and with a bad compressor I believe it is time to buy a new refrigerator. You are going to be looking at a $500+ repair bill! Typically I recommend repairing most anything because I am not a “just buy a new one" type person but this is a major repair for a refrigerator this old.

Keep in mind I am not trying to sway you this is just my opinion on the matter.
