Defrost heater staying on too long

I am having issues with my freezer defrosting too much. It melts then re-freezes everything leaving my ice bin a big chunk of ice and frost/ice all over the inside of the freezer.

I monitored one of the defrost cycles and it was about 25-30 min long. the heater was on for a little over 20 of those min. A thermometer I placed at the top of the evaporator near the thermometer read 100 degrees once the heater finally turned off.

From reading some of the posts here i thought my problem was with the thermostat. I replaced the thermostat, but that did not solve my problem. I did not test it first because I found the part for $8 which was cheaper than buying a multimeter to test it and I was convinced this was the problem.

Any suggestions on what to look at next?

I would replace both freezer thermistors, particularly the one near the evaporator. If that will not fix it, replace the motherboard AP4436216, thermistors AP3185407 The thermistors terminate defrost when the temperature is well above freezing.

I thought the thermostat terminated the defrost but it makes sense that a temperature sensor would be a part of that. Is there a way to test these? I can borrow or go buy a multitester.

Yes, worth the expense for a meter if it is just the thermistors. You can go to the sticky above GE refrigerators (GS & PS models) for info.
Also, remove the defrost thermostat and check in an oven. I think it opens around 125 degrees.
If the evaporator fan is turning while it is defrosting, we have a entirely different problem.

Turns out it was the thermistors. I replaced both of them in the Freezer and it all works now. Thanks for the help!
