Dryer Conversion: 3 prong to 4 prong, but a little weird.

After moving to a new house, I need to change my old 3 prong dryer cord to a 4 prong. I understand that the black and red wires from the new cord will go on the side terminals, matching their colors to the colors inside the dryer.

The problem I’m having is that the middle terminal has both a white and green wire built on to it, and the green is acting as the bonding jumper connected to the frame of the dryer. I want to remove this green wire from the frame so I can attach the green wire from the new cord there, but if I do, the other end of it will still be attached to the middle terminal since there’s no way to unscrew it. Will it be okay leaving the unscrewed end hanging lose? If I unscrew it from the frame and then attach it to the middle terminal along with the white wire from the new cord, I’ll have four wires on the middle terminal: both ends of the green jumper as well as the white wire from inside the machine and the white from the new cord.

Phew, sorry to ramble. All of the stuff I’ve read online says nothing about having a green bonding jumper that can’t be removed completely, so I’m a little confused. Plus I’ve read in a couple of places that I should leave the green jumper on the frame and attach the green from the new cord there with it, which seems contrary to other guides. :confused: Thanks a bunch for any info!

This sounds OK to me.

So am I as normally the ground wire can be disconnected at both ends and removed.

Green and white must be seperate.
You could hust remove it from the frame and cut it off at the terminal strip.
Then if you ever had to convert it back to 3 wire you would have to add a ground strap.

Thanks so much! I cut the green wire off the terminal and got the new cord hooked up today, and it’s working like a charm. I sure appreciate the help!
