Dryer Drum Sagging in GE Spacemaker Combo Unit

Hello,

I am trying to repair a friends dryer. The dryer drum is sagging and resting on the seal that goes around the door opening. When the dryer has clothes in it, it has a hard time starting. Also, the as the clothes tumble, they get caught in the gap at the bottom of the door opening and get little cuts in them as they get pulled around the gap that gets smaller from where the drum is resting on top of the opening as mentioned before. I removed the front of the dryer and a lot of lint was in the cabinet, which I believe is because of the gap in the front of the drum. My primary question is, what supports the front of the drum. There are no wheels or other form of support mechanism under the front of the drum to provide support. Is the drum supposed to rest on the seal in the front? Is it supposed to be rigidly attached to the back of the dryer. When the dryer is together, you can lift up on the drum in order to align it.

Thanks in advance,

Herb

Herb,

Your initial diagnosis is correct, the damage to the clothing is due to the drum being out of alignment.

There are two support areas for the drum.

The rear drum bearing assembly and the front glide assembly in what appears to be the top drum seal on the front panel.

I normally replace both parts at the same time.

You will need to remove the drum from the cabinet, to replace the rear bearing kit. Not too hard to do (bearing shaft is a pressure/snap fit).
I attached parts pictures and numbers for you, so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect.
