When the timer stops my dryer, the heater sometimes keeps going for hours. The dryer is off in all other respects. This must be a bad relay somewhere. Is that in the timer itself, or is there a secondary relay or switch that is not switching off? Not sure what part to buy.

It is most likely the motor switch. Which means you need a new Motor. Tom http://www.applianceeducator.com/parts.htm
The motor is stopping properly, so I don’t see how it’s the motor. The problem is that the heater is NOT stopping. A local repair person told me that the timer has two separate contact points – one to stop the motor (working), and one to stop the heater (not working). Is this true?
We have a similar problem we noticed today. In addition to the heater staying on after the rest of the timers/motors quit running, we also noticed something else peculiar.
When everything is off, even after we get the heater element to go off, if we move the timer dial to any "on" position, but don’t press the start button to actually turn the dryer on, the heating element will engage and come on. Nothing else will be running, but the heating element will turn on and start heating up.
We have a Maytag Legacy Series dryer, by the way.

Same problem. Your motor switch is shorted, so you need to replace your motor. Tom http://www.applianceeducator.com/parts.htm
