Dryer making horrible rattling sound when running

 Was just checking out my mom’s older dryer and when it was turned on, I thought people across the street had turned on an air-pump-driven spray cleaner to clean their driveway. Turns out, it was coming from my mom’s dryer in the garage. I pulled it out and checked out the lower cover and the belt looks like it is about to fall apart, but it still works. The barrel (drum?) stayed toasty hot, and turned, but made a hell of a racket. I jammed a nail under the housing for the motor to alleviate some of the noise temporarily, but I know it is just a quick fix and not much of that. Is the belt the culprit? The noise lessened when I jammed a flat head screwdriver below the motor housing and tested prying the housing up. The noise semi went away, but it is still damned loud. Plus, how the heck do I get into that thing? I miss the days when I could pop the cover off and dive inside. HLEP!!!
