Electric Broiler element meltdown

Whirlpool slide-in range/oven, 15-20+ years old. The broiler was pre-heated. When we went to add food to toast, the element looked a bit like welding rod and was sparking and dripping down. I turned the range circuit breaker to off, and later removed the element, a lot of which looks similar to a burned up sparkler.

I’m waiting until Monday to look in the back of the stove, but if I don’t see any other signs of burning in back, is it safe to just replace the element? We did hear some beeping lately, which didn’t last too long, but may have been associated with the broiler.

Elements can just fail, burn in two, and sometimes they put on a light show like yours did.

Most of the time a new element fixes it. Sometimes it takes out the control. Without a model number that’s about all I can do.
