Element is full on or off, not variable.

Maytag Gemini range
Model: mer6772baw
Problem: When "dual element" burner knob is turned on it’s always operating as if knob were on full high. Turning the knob won’t lower the heat.
It does turn off.
(Separate toggle switch still properly selects either inner coil OR both coils.)

I believe it’s likely a fault in the "Infinite Switch" knob-control.

But, looking at the element kit
[URL="http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=4009116&image=0)
I can see a rod of some sort, and wondered if it could be a thermistor that’s failed, causing the controller to ‘think it’s not heating’.
Out of curiosity, what is that rod?
& what is the block with 4 terminals that’s part of this assembly, simply a connector, or some type of control?

The range top hot surface indicator light still works properly for this & the other 3 burners.

Possibly a coincidence: There is a blackened area, roughly 1" diameter, on the underside of the glass top, near the connector block to this element. This blackened area is close to a break in the insulation through which wires pass down toward the ovens.

In the service manual it says,
"Note: When replacing the infinite switch, the switch must be matched to the element."
I assume that means, ‘Don’t use this type switch for one of the different types of elements on this stove,’ NOT: "This switch needs to be individually calibrated with a matched element assembly. They can only be purchased and installed in pairs."

Thanks for your thoughts,
