Freezer not freezing food, Frig seems to be ok

My freezer is not freezing anything. The temp is cool, but not cold. The ice maker is also not producing any ice. I checked the defrost heater fan and it is running, the compressor sounds like it is running, as well as the condenser fan. I pulled the back plate off the inside of the freezer to inspect the defrost themostat. I found the defrost thermostat was covered in frost. Is this a sign the defrost thermostat is bad? Any other ideas what might cause this problem?

I also forced a manual defrost cycle and the defrost cycle kicked on, the evaporator coils defrosted. Shortly after the defrost cycle was finised, the evaporator fans runs and the evaporator coils start to develop frost again.

Thanks

What was the frost pattern on the evaporator coils?

The top two evaporator coils appears to have frost on them. The rest of the coils appears to be ok. I attached a pic of the coils this morning. Thanks

You have a refrigerant leak, clogged condenser, or a worn compressor. If condenser ok, you might want to call a pro in to look at it. Repair cost probably more than the fridg is worth!
I have seen a lot of Amana’s with a evaporator leak, definitely not a cheap repair.

Thanks for the information. Is there any way I can test those parts to determine which is the problem??

Richappy you nailed it. It is a bad compressor, bad evaporator coils and a bad heat exchanger. I am waiting on the home warranty people to decided if it will be a replace or repair job. Any recommendations? If it is a replace job, what frig would you recommend buying?

Thanks again for all the help!!

I would NEVER get an old Amana repaired, just too risky. I would get a GE, service them at Penn State, very little refrigeration problems.
