Fridge Compressor Problems

Hi All,

This is my first post here. I registered with the hopes that someone here could lend me a helping hand. I recently bought a soda dispensing mini fridge, the kind that you push a bottom in the front and out pops a can of soda at the bottom(not sure if that matter the type of fridge or not, although I assume it doesn’t). The gentleman that I bought it off of installed a 3 N’ 1 relay/starter/overload in it because he said the fridge would not cool the cans of soda. After getting it home, and ensuring the 3 N’ 1 relay was wired correctly(it was) I pulled out my multi-meter to test it.

Seeing as how I am very new to this(I learned how to test the compressor using a multi-meter via youtube), this is where I have some questions. Does the fridge need to be plugged in to get a reading? I ask this because when I do not have the fridge plugged in, I do not get any readings from any of the pins on the compressor. When I do have the fridge plugged I get a reading with my meter touching the common and the start, and when I touch the common and the running pins. When I touch the start to the running, I do not get a reading at all.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Anything at this point will be helpful as I am trying to find out if I need to get a new relay, or a new compressor.

Thanks in advanced,
