Front loader won't spin, drain

I have a Kenmore model 417.41142000, bought 6/01, it made a really load noise as it tried to spin, I though it spinned, when the load was done I went to take the clothes out, they were soaking wet, put it on spin and noticed it just tumbled, didn’t go into spin cycle, I checked the dispenser and the softner was still there, this told me it didn’t even go into rinse mode, so it isn’t going into spin cycle either, what can I do, if anything, is there a part that I can order to fix this? Help needed… I tried several times and it just won’t spin, there is water left in the tub, I tried on all three cycles, it just tumbles as washing…

Start by taking off the front service panel and then cleaning everything out of the pump and drain hoses to and from the pump.

I have the front service panel off, so I just need to remove the hoses underneath, have you dealt with this before? When I put it in spin cycle it sounds like something is just humming and not doing anything, then I move the knob further, and it starts to just tumble.

Go ahead and clean things out, and then try it again. If that does not solve the problem see if there are tech notes inside that lower panel and put the machine through the trouble shooting it describes.

I took the large hose off that leads to the drum, a lot of water came out, I couldn’t get the rest of the hoses off, do you recommend a way to take these off, they lead to some kind of gadit, is this the pump? I put my fingers down inside and I didn’t feel any thing, objects of any kind, just water. I appreciate you help…

This service manual (your machine is a Frigidaire Gallery sold by Sears under the Kenmore brand) will show you how to take out the pump, and also give you tips on testing components.

If it is not a blockage, and not an electrical problem your tub bearing may be damaged and preventing the spinning.

Thank you so much for your help, I will see what I can do with this problem, thank you also for the extra information, that will come in handy when I try to figure this out, you are great!

Well glad to help, let us know how it turns out.

Sidfink43,

I did some checking with my washer, it seems like it is either a defective timer or board, do you know how much a defective timer would be?

We are not a part of the APP parts operation, but if you will call them with your model number they can quote the price for a timer and speed control board.

Thanks again for all your help!

I think you can try replacing the motor/speed control board, which is expensive and may or may not fix the machine or replace it.

I am strongly biased against front loading washers, because they use microprocessor controls and because the horizontal axis is perpendicular to the weight load, which ultimately causes bearing problems. Your machine is overdue for a bearing problem, so I would take the money you planned to spend to repair it and add enough to get a no frills top loading machine.

Thank you again for your input, I am going to replace it and with a top loader, you have me sold, I’ve also heard from others that said the same, 8 years just isn’t long enough for a washer, should’ve lasted longer. Any suggestions on a good model for a top loade? Just thought I would ask, there is so many out there to choose from, it is overwhelming…

I’ve always found that Kenmore/Whirlpool/Roper are the easiest to fix (they all have the same build) but other brands may be a little more reliable. even though others may be a little more reliable i would stick with one of the above brands because if/when a problem arises its easier to fix yourself instead of paying someone to do it.

I followed the advice on this posting. I took the pump apart, and found nothing BUT them I looked into the feeder hose and found a ton of screws, wire and thread that, when under pressure, filled the impeller and stopped it.
I cleaned it and flushed it, put it back on and …it works like a charm!!! Went through all the cycles, it drained, spun etc…

The clamps are a pain plus the position you are in but worth it!!

Great advice from the contributors!!

hi there, the pdf link you offered to the o/p above doesn’t come up for me. Could you email it to me directly?
Warmly, Tricia

Hi Tricia

Please start a new post with a brand and model number for your machine and tell us exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks
