Hi. Our gas dryer will tumble but not heat.
At first the heat would go on at high setting (but not lower settings), then the heat would turn off after a few minutes.
We replaced the coils (solenoids). It worked for one try on the timed cycle but now the heat won’t turn on - the igniter glows for a bit but no flames. (Got a gas smell so I turned it off, shut off the gas and opened the windows).
Since the igniter glows does that mean it is still ok?
What should we try checking/replacing next?
Please check the order in witch the coils are installed. The three prong one goes first towards you, then the two prong goes inside. There is the metal sleeve on the shaft where the three prong coil goes. Make sure it’s there.Sometimes it comes off together with the old coil.
If everything checks OK and the ignitor glows on and off then most likely it’s a bad gas valve.
It comes with the new coils.

Hi Simon. Thanks for the help! You are correct - that metal sleeve was on the old coil. When we moved it to the new 3-prong coil the dryer now ignites.
BUT now there is a new problem So the dryer turns on, there is this kind of spurting/popping noise, the heat comes on, and then there is this clicking noise. Also (big problem) there is a distinct gas smell. The gas smell is strong in the drum (where the clothes are).
To be safe we turned off the gas line again and unplugged the dryer.
What could be causing this?
Could it be the bracket for the coils not being screwed tight enough? (it was very tightly originally, I am not sure if we were able to tighten it as much when we replaced it).
Both coils has a little ball on the top side witch goes into the two holes in the bracket.
The three prong coil has prongs at the bottom, when installed.
Do not over tight the screws.
