GE Profile Stuck in Defrost??

Ok - bear with me a second because I’m going to do the long version of this problem. I just may think something I noticed 10 years ago when this was new has to do with my issue right now. Maybe not - but figured I’d put it out there just in case.

I have a GE Prifile side by side, model GSS25LSMB. Since day one, I have always needed to leave the fridge and freezer temps at the warmest setting (1 out of 9) otherwise stuff would freeze on the fridge side. By leaving it at 1, there were never any issues though, so I never called to check and see if this was the norm.

A few months ago, I woke up in the morning and noticed that everything had melted in the freezer, and the fridge side was definitely not cooling anymore either. We unlaoded everything into coolers and cleaned up the mess - which is right about the time it decided to start working properly again.

I let it run for a day to make sure it was ok, loaded all the food back in, and everthing was peachy for a while. I chalked it up to a stuck defrost cycle and thought everything was good to go.

A month later, it happened again. Thinking it was the defrost cycle getting stuck, I unplugged it for 10 minutes, plugged it back in, and all was right with the world. A week later, same thing…then it happened 3 days later, and I finally decided this has been way too much fun already. Additionally, this last time it went out, the unplug/plug back in trick quit working.

I replaced the WR50X10068 Defrost Limiter Thermostat and the WR55X10025 Temperature Sensor yesterday, but no luck. It still turns on, you can hear everything running like it should…but no cooling (on either side).

On other odd thing possibly related to the whole defrost issue - or possibly someting all by itself - is the freezer light. I had assumed this thing burned out a year ago. I really didn’t care about replacing it because who holds the freezer door open that long anyway…besides my 9 year old I mean. So anyway, this light has been "burned out" for a while. Anytime the fridge was going into this defrost mode, I could predict it because the freezer light would actually start working…even if just a flicker on and off. And here I thought it was dead!!! But here’s the quirky catch - when in full heart attack (defrost) mode, the light works beautifully! No flickering or stuttering like Porky Pig - nothing! BUUUUT…when the freezer is working like it’s supposed to, the light is dead as a doornail. It’s just in that in between stage where it starts flickering.

Sorry for the long version, but I just can’t help but wonder now if these other electrical issues are related to my primary problem of a fridge/freezer that will not cool? Is this something that could be affected by a bad WR55X10942 Main Control Board board?

Thanks,
Chad

Hi.

Sounds like you have a bad freezer door switch and/or the main control board. I recommend to replace both.

The door switch [part]WR23X10179[/part]

The control board [part]WR55X10942[/part]

Here are the breakdown diagrams and 03-Freezer Section parts for GE GSS25LSMBBS - AppliancePartsPros.com

Post the results.

Simon.

Thanks Simon! I will definitely report back with results.

You are welcome.

Simon.

Results! I tried the door switch first…nada. Swapped out the board, and we’re up and running good as new again! Thanks Simon!
