My GE Profile washer stopped working today. It will fill with water, but then wont start the agitating cycle. I removed the front cover and set it to spin. I see the motor try to turn but only turns slightly then stops. How do I determine which part may have gone out? This will be my first washer repair, wish me luck. :o
Could be several things
I would take off the belt and see if the motor operates freely. If it does, you will likely have to have the transmission/brake assembly replaced (it is a single unit, and not too expensive a part) but you will probably need a tech to do this.
If you want to try it yourself, try to get a service manual. GE is very tight with these, but you might find one on the net or on ********** for about $5.00.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
sorry it took a while, but I checked it today and the motor does spin without the belt on it. whats the next thing to check?
I dont know how much resistance it is suppose to have but one direction is easy (the agitator moves) the other direction is stiffer but moves the drum. I can move it both directions. Can the motor just not have enough power to move it?
Yeah, possible not likely.
It could be the clutch pulley, this part

which can only be really tested by replacement.
If you feel comfortable doing so, operate the machine with the belt off and observe the motor (you can empty it by moving the timer to the end of the wash cycle and engaging the pump). If you think the motor is ok, you can consider taking a chance with the above part.
Wish we could be more definitive. Good luck and let us know what happens.
if it will cost over 100-150 I might as well take a chance with a different washer. I was kinda hoping it would be a 25-75 problem. oh well. thanks for all your help.
Yeah, sorry, but we are dealing with GE here, the most expensive parts in the industry. I guess that’s why they are still around, and companies like RCA are a distant memory.
Good luck with a new machine.
cant afford a new one, unfortunately with the economy and all. But I did get a free older washer that has a problem with filling. At least I can use this one for the time being. I posted the problem under washer repair, again. And again thanks for the help. I am learning a lot on this site already.
