GEwasher spins doesn't agitate

Hello all -
My washer will fill, spin out, rinse (in both wash and rinse cycles). It will not agitate at all. I thought it might be the timer, but paid an appliance repairman $90 to come check out the washer anyway. I was billed $90 for 10 minutes, he said it was the timer, would be $300 to fix. I ordered the timer from this site, installed, easy. Unfortunately, it still does the same thing.
I am not very acquainted with washers but am mechanically minded and think I can track it down if someone can narrow options for me. Have you got any suggestions for what to try next?

I don’t know if it’s pertinent, but we had a very hard freeze last winter and I had to replace the water inlet valve. It has worked fine since then. Also, the agitation was strong - never weak or labored, so there was no dying process

Any help is appreciated. I have a new baby and the laundry is piling up! Don’t want to take the kids to the laundry mat…

Well hold on to your old timer. If you do not need the new timer you can return it if you purchased it from this site, see the returns policy for details.

I think your next step is to take off the front panel and see if you can manually turn the transmission pulley in either direction. Then start it and observe the motor to see what is happening when it is trying to agitate. Take off the belt and see if the motor is turning when it is in agitation cycle.

This should tell you if the problem is with the transmission/brake assembly or an electrical problem with the wiring to the motor.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.
