I have to push and hold the start button for my dryer to run. If I hold the button down the dryer will run and heat normally…but I can’t stand next to my machine and hold the button for hours to dry my clothes.

Hm here’s a thought i know my degree from MIT would be useful some day perhaps change your start button? And then there was light!

You will notice that there is a centrifugal switch (5M ) on the motor.
It is wired in parallel with the start switch.
It closes when the motor gets close to operating speed.
It ensures that the heater does not come on before there is air flow but also keeps the motor running after you release the start switch.
Perhaps it is shot.
I would check that the wires/connections are OK.
You need to replace the motor in order to replace the switch as it is not available as a separate part.
