ice maker crushes, no cubes

My Kenmore refrigerator, model 253.5466440A has an in the door ice dispenser and it appears to not be able to deliver cubes. The ice comes out crushed regardless of the setting. I happen to have just come back from being two weeks away, but we had a house sitter who was using it so I don’t think it was from lack of use. Any ideas?

I have the same problem and i replaced the solenoid. It still despences only crushed ice. what should i do next?

Hi Duane,

What is the model number of the fridge?

Gene.

Gene,
My G.E. refrigerator model number is TFX25JRYD WW, serial number is LR251043.

Duane,

Does the solenoid clicks when the ice dispenser calls for a whole cubes?

Gene.

Gene,

I have a Kenmore side-by-side, model No. 253.54622407.

Mine recently stopped giving whole cubes. Just gives crushed, no matter what the setting. I don’t know about testing for continuity, but the solenoid does click when I ask for cubed, and does not click when I ask for crushed. I thought it would be the other way around, based on the result, but that’s it. Do I have a bad solenoid?

Thanks.

I have the same problem. GE Model #GSH25KGPABB. I just replaced the solenoid and it still does not click or dispense ice. I also replaced the front panel with a new one that I already had and that didn’t help. Any other ideas. How can I test to see if the new solenoid is bad?

Does the gate in the ice chute open when you push the lever? Does the water dispenser work?

Does the gate in the ice chute open when you push the lever? Does the water dispenser work?

The flap in the ice chute in the door opens however the gate attached to the metal rod does not open the gate that is supposed to allow the cubes to clear the grinders. The water dispenser works and crushed ice works when both the crushed ice button is depressed and when the cubed ice button is depressed. With the door open and the door button depressed and cubed ice selected the solenoid does not activate. I tested the solenoid resistance and got 35 ohms.
Thanks for taking the time to assist me.

Check if there is 120 VAC to the solenoid when it should be activated (tape in the light switch). If there is no proper voltage then the main control board most likely is bad.

  • The part number for the main control board is AP4297272
