Hi, some background:
Kenmore front-load washer. Manufactured 04/03
The 970 model number also seems to correspond to a Frigidaire number, I believe my Kenmore washer was made by Frigidaire. The 970 model number also appears to be a Canadian number, which is very similar to the 417 (?) US model.
Anyway, here’s the deal. The washer started leaking so I took off the lower front and top panels to investigate. What I’ve found is that the washer leaks from the O-ring outer tub gasket (the gasket between the two halves).
From the diagnostics I’ve done already I’ve noticed that it only leaks during the final (fast / high speed) spin. It does not seem to leak at any time other than the final spin. And smaller loads don’t seem to leak as much or at all.
So it’s clear that the gasket is starting to fail. At this point it is minor. I was able to determine the replacement gasket part # is 134146100 and runs about $15 - $20. The thing is it’s quite a job to tackle as the drum, tub, motor, etc. all have to come out. Not impossible but it is a pretty big job!
So, the question is… Can I use caulk / silicone along the point where the two tub halves meet as an interim measure to stop the leaking?. I’d prefer to just caulk/silicone the seam if it will last for a while. I realize the long term solution is to order the gasket and set aside a weekend for the replacement job. Any advice? Thanks!
