Kenmore Series 90 Plus 110.28942890 brake issue??

I have a washer that will do everything ok except when it goes to stop from a spinning cycle. First time I noticed anything wrong was on the slow cycle when it would stop between cycles. It would go "bang!" and would twist in place. Now when the spin cycle ends and it goes to stop it goes "bam, bam, bam, bam", shaking the house, all the time it is slowing down and seems to take awhile to finally stop. Looking online, I have suspect that I’m needing a clutch-complete or brake & drive tube complete or both. Looking for any insite. Maybe it’s time for something new? Help or advice much appreciated.

before tearing into machine, I did a little more "investigative work". as the washer goes through its cycles, this banging noise only happens on the "first" spin cycle after the wash. when it fills up for the rinse and spins at the end of the rinse cycle, the banging does NOT happen. i held the top open and watched. it seems the banging was coming from inside the agitator (i guess it’s called). so it seems to be related to the particular spin after the wash and not related to the spin after the rinse. any more ideas before i grab the tools?

thanks,

the banging noise starts happening right at the end of the spin cycle when the drum is in transition to stopping. NOT when it is actually spinning. and, like i stated, the entire cycle consists of 2 spins (1 in wash, 1 in rinse) and this only happens coming out of the FIRST spin cycle, right before the rinse cycle begins.

I agree. Nat called it right on the money, you to drags. I just needed a little more confirmation. At 50, I guess I am getting a little conservative. Awesome job to all!!! It’s great to be in good company. Tom http://www.applianceeducator.com

The drive block should be ALL you need. Make sure that you get the new block down onto the "tangs" on the spin tube and that you get the Nut TIGHT!!! You should be all set!!!

I wanted to followup with you guys since I completed the work. THE DRIVE BLOCK WAS BAD. You guys hit it right on the head. The drive block inner corners were worn (angled) allowing the block (and tub) to jump the tangs it fit down on. FIRST time I ever tore a washing machine apart. Was easy, once you see how it goes together.

One side note, and for others…when I got to the spinner-nut, I couldn’t get it off. Had to stop and order a spinner-nut wrench, which set me back about a week and a half while it was shipped. Once I got that, the nut came off in about 3 seconds. Now I have a spinner-nut wrench and don’t anticipate using it ever again. If you know someone who wants to buy one cheap…

Anyway, thanks again for saving me lots of $$$ and helping me through this.

For anyone reading this, I recommend these guys highly!!

Glad you were able to get it going!!
