Both the refrigerator and freeze stopped cooling. The fan next to the compressor is working, however if the compressor is working, it does not make much noise. I unplugged the unit for a few hours plugged it back in and it started to work again. Made ice, cooled, the whole ten yards. The following day, notice that the unit was not longer cooling. Heard the fan, but no air flowing into the unit. Compressor same as it was before, little if any noise, and didn’t feel much when I put my hand on it.
Suspected the start realy. First I took ohm readings on compressor. Read roughly 4 ohms between pins 1 & 3, then 3 ohms between pins 1 & 2, and then 7 ohms between 2 & 3. Checked each pin to see if grounded, no pins grounded.
Took the relay to appliance shop (it did not rattle), they tested it and it tested good. Decided to try the overload relay to see if that was the problem. Unit is now running. Not sure if the issue is the compressor. Can a bad compressor work fine for a while then stop working and then work ok later on.?
Any help would be appricated…
When it fails, is the compressor hot,but not vibrating, or cold.

It seems like it was hot… Since I replaced the overload switch/relay, it is continuing to run… Hummmm
It did the same thing the other day, however it stopped running (fan & compressor running) after 12 or so hours… It has now been running for 15 hours.
If it stops again and the compressor is hot… that will tell me… the compressor has failed?
Is it common that a compressor can work then stop working? I assume it is not like a light bulb… either it works or it doesn’t…

BTW, when I say it is hot… it is not to the point where I can’t put my hand on it. Hot is a tough question. I would say very warm… not sure if that helps…
I have never seen a compressor go intermittent. Best to check other ateas for problems. You might have an intermittent overload Klixon.
