kenmore washer blew the breaker

We all of a sudden had the breaker blow in our house and then realized that the washer was probably the cullprit. It stopped full of water and now will not do anything. It probably was overloaded somewhat and from the smell of it, something has burned up. What would be the best way to proceed with fixing it up or is it best to get rid of it and buy another used up one. I am not sure of the age. It might be over 10 years old.

thanks in advance for the help.

Ok, a lot of possibilities here.

  1. Your breaker may be broken. Check be seeing if you have 120v to the outlet your washer is plugged into.

  2. If you have power, it is possible that your transmission jammed, causing the motor to over load the circuit and set off the breaker. You are going to want to take off the cabinet, unhook the pump, pull off the motor and see if you can turn the shaft coming from the transmission in each direction. If it is jammed, I would go ahead and replace the machine.

  3. If the transmission turns freely, test the motor. If its the problem you can decide if it is worth replacing, or using the funds towards a new/used washer.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.
