My ~8-yr-old Kenmore front loader just started making a very loud knocking noise during the top-speed spin cycle. The tub suspension seems fine and there are no noises in any other cycles. I’ve read that it could be the main tub bearing. Is this probably correct, and if so is it a very difficult DIY repair?
On these models the rear bearing fails regularly, and the suspension component usually fail at the same time or soon after.
The repair is expensive because the bearing is sold with the rear drum, and if you got 5+ years out of the machine that’s great, so go ahead and get a new machine. I strongly recommend a top loader which will not have the problems you are currently experiencing.
